The crate train puppy method of housebreaking a pup involves putting the animal in a crate or cage that is just big enough for the puppy to lie down in. The theory is that a puppy will not soil its bedding because it does not want to lie down in the urine or feces to sleep.
The crate train puppy method actually works quite well. The puppy learns that he can control his bladder and bowels for a longer time period than he thought possible. Immediately before the puppy is put in the crate or cage, and immediately when the puppy is let out of the crate or cage he should be taken outside to his favorite “outhouse” patch of grass.
It’s important for the crate train puppy housebreaking to work, that the crate or cage be only large enough for the puppy to lie down in. If the cage is too large the puppy may urinate or defecate in the corner and go lie down at the other end of the cage. Of course as the puppy gets bigger the cage must also get bigger but it shouldn’t take too many cages for the puppy to be housebroken.
The crate method requires that food or water never be put in the cage with the puppy It is strictly a small “jail” until the housebreaking process is complete. This means that whenever the puppy is inside the house and cannot be watched directly, he goes into the crate. If you are cooking, bathing or performing other activities, which keep you from direct observation of the puppy it is crate time. Overnight sleeping is definitely crate time.
As your faith in your puppy’s ability to not urinate or defecate in the house grows, leave him out of the crate for longer and longer periods of time. It won’t be long until you can have your puppy out of the cage most of the time. Your puppy will then start to signal you that he needs to go outside when potty time arrives. Before you know it, your puppy will be all grown up and you’ll look back fondly on the way you “taught” your now grown dog to behave appropriately.

If you are a dog owner who’s dog only gets to go outside when you walk it because you don’t have a fence or wall to keep it securely on your property, a hidden dog fence could be a great option for you. There are 2 important options to these wireless radio systems that you should consider before deciding on a specific fence to go with.
1) Type of warning correction. When your dog nears the barrier, a special collar that the dog wears warns the dog first. If he or she continues on toward the border, the collar then “corrects” the dog and ideally, it retreats. The correction options are usually one of two types. There is an electric shock type warning, and a spray mist. Do your research and find a system that provides enough for you to not only set the perimeter of the boundary, but also put some in front of any trees, bushes, plants, cars, gardens, or anything else you want your dog to stay away from.

Many people are under the false impression that you can only crate train puppies and they refrain from crate training older dogs as they think it is too difficult.
There are also many people who think crate training is inhumane but done correctly this couldn’t be further from the truth.
The dogs crate should never be used as a place to be sent when punished.
When dogs have been crate trained correctly they actually enjoy the security of having their own place to stay.
Even at times when they are not expected to stay in the crate the dog will find comfort in it’s own area of the home.
Provided the crate is in a sheltered place and there is fresh water available they will be completely happy to have their own home.
Dogs often get possessive of their crate and other members of the family, children in particular, need to understand that this is the dogs special area that they must respect.

How to house train a dog after it has been in a crate for almost half of its life.?
My dog, Trixie, has been in her crate for almost half of her life, so when I try to teach her to be out all the time, she gets too hyper and runs through the house, she knows how to pee outside and all that, but she won’t be calm when she is out. I NEED HELP!
Lots and lots of exercise and some obedience training. Teach her what sit, stay and down mean. If she knows and obeys commands, she can’t run around. does anybody have any good recomandations for a puppy housebreaking spray. there are so many to choose from =/
Spray? = Ripoff
Anything good is made from cheap ingrediates you can get yourself for a fraction of the price. This is what I do and it works great.
Dog Urine Smell and Stain Remover
Ingredients
Baking Soda
White Vinegar
Dishwashing Detergent
3% Hydrogen Peroxide
Directions:
1. If the area is still wet you should first attempt to absorb the dog urine. Leaving it there to dry out will only encourage bacterial growth which causes the smell. The best method is to place several layers of paper towel over the wet area and tread on it so as to soak up as much of the dog urine as you possibly can. You may have to repeat this several times until no more urine can be soaked up.
Sometimes dog urine accidents have already dried because you did not notice them previously. You can find dried urine patches on your carpet with the aid of a black light. The dog urine stains will fluoresce under the ultra violet light in a darkened room. Hand held black lights are quiet inexpensive usually costing between $15 – $25
2. The next step is to mix a solution of fifty percent white vinegar and fifty percent water. You must use a liberal amount of this solution to reach the carpet fibers deep down. Work the solution in with a scrubbing brush to ensure it penetrates the carpet fibers below. Now blot the area again using the paper towel method above. The vinegar will neutralize the ammonia in the dog urine. This area must now be allowed to dry which you can assist by using a fan or opening the windows. If you own a wet and dry vacuum extractor use that to remove excess moisture.
3. When the area has dried sprinkle a good handful of baking soda over the soiled area. Mix half a cup of 3% hydrogen peroxide with a teaspoon of detergent. Ordinary dishwashing detergent is quite suitable. Put on a pair of rubber gloves and slowly pour the hydrogen peroxide and detergent mixture over the baking powder. Work the dissolving baking soda well into the carpet, first with your fingers and then with a scrubbing brush.
Once again allow the area to dry completely and then vacuum thoroughly.
In areas that have been heavily soiled with dog urine you may have to repeat the process again.
Important. Never use ammonia or ammonia-based products on the carpet to remove pet pee. One of the ingredients of urine is ammonia and your dog or puppy may well be encouraged to re-offend in the same area if it detects the smell of ammonia. Many household cleaner cleaners contain ammonia so be sure to read the label.
