puppy daycare
should i put my yorkie in doggy daycare or will he be ok home alone for about 5 hours a day while i am working
i work days and my husband works nights, so my puppy will be home alone about 4-5 hours a day. Is that too long for a puppy to be home alone? Should I consider doggy daycare?
With a wee little one like that I would think doggy daycare is potentially more dangerous than beneficial. I think I’d leave the pup home crated or in an enclosed area.

People need someone to take care of their dogs while they are not home. There are just some dogs that don’t do well being left home alone. So just like daycare for children, there is doggy daycare.
Doggy daycare takes care of your dog while you’re gone. This means some recreational time during the day, being fed, being played with, and being pampered all around. There are activities for dogs just like there are for kids. Dogs respond to this much better than being left home alone where they can tear up the house, do their business when they are not supposed to, and where they can sulk all day because they are alone. For most dog owners, grooming your pet thoroughly and consistently can be a challenging yet highly rewarding activity for both you and your furry friend.
It’s challenging in that you must stick to a regular routine and not neglect your dog’s fundamental hygiene needs. On the other hand, it can be extremely rewarding because it gives you a chance to spend time with your pet – valuable bonding time!
There are a few basic grooming requirements that you must adhere to:
1) Bathing: Many dog lovers reluctantly schedule regular bath time. You may have mental images of your wet dog running through the house and shaking off in front of your new couch. However, bathing doesn’t have to be a major ordeal.
Using a self serve dog wash is a great idea if the thought of cleaning up is hindering you from regular bathing. Your dog can enjoy (or at least tolerate) bath time if you learn proper bathing techniques.
Regular bathing should occur at least once per month; weekly if needed. Always use shampoo that is designed specifically for your dog (and soap free).
2) Brushing: This can be the most rewarding grooming habit you can enjoy with your pet. Most dogs like regular brushing. Not only does it help your dog maintain a healthy coat, it also strengthens your relationship. Your brushing schedule depends on your dog’s hair length:
• Short haired dogs can go several weeks (no more than a month) between brushing
• Medium haired dogs needs more regular brushing – at least once per week.
• Long haired dogs require daily brushing in order to prevent tangles and matting
3) Haircuts: If you own a dog with rapidly growing hair you will need to have regular haircuts – every 2-5 weeks. There are many resources available to help you learn proper cutting techniques. Most major pet stores offer classes and all the tools you’ll need.
In addition to bathing, brushing, and haircuts, you must also pay attention to nail trimming and ear care. Spend time learning proper nail trimming and using the right tools so as to not inflict pain to your pet. Ear care should always be done with the supervision of a veterinarian.
Taking the time to groom your dog regularly is rewarding despite its challenges. Remember to learn proper techniques as well as use all the right tools. If you find that you are not able to keep up with a proper grooming schedule, consider visiting a professional dog groomer or find services that make life more enjoyable – for both you and your best friend!
