Glucosamine Capsules
Alternative medicines for arthritis?
I can’t take the prescription drugs, and I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for alternate treatments. A friend mentioned glucosamine, and fish/seal oil capsules. Has anyone tried these? With what results?
Glucosamin and chondroitin sulphate are commonly prescribed to help relieve arthritis pain and rebuild cartilage. Problem is it takes months to start working and wont do a thing if the biomechanics of the body are off and not allowing cartilage to be rebuilt. I suggest you check out Pete Ogoscue’s books Health through motion and Pain Free. Fish oil (Omega 3 fatty acids) help decrease inflammation in the body thereby decreasing pain..they should be taken daily as a supplement along with a anti-inflammatory diet that is limited in red meats and simple sugars(white bread, cakes, etc…).

Liquid Glucosamine
Safe to crush glucosamine tablets or capsules?
I can’t swallow these huge pills or capsules. Liquid is expensive. Can I crush the tablets or open the capsules and mix with juice?

Thanks, Sketdoc… I have arthritis all over my body, and these pills make my daily life easier. I don’t care if they really work or placebo effect, I will keep taking them.
It’s fine to crush them. I have used Glucosamine and it works. When I’ve run out, I feel pain in about 3 to 4 days.
I used to be a distance runner so my knees have some miles and abuse on them. This helps, but from what I’ve read it only helps some people not all. See if it works for you.

Is it okay to give a young dog Missing Link Plus with glucosamine?
I have a 9 year old shepherd mix with bad knees and my vet recommended putting him on a glucosamine supplement. I’ve read good things about the Missing Link dietary supplement so I got the Plus formula that includes glucosamine and was giving it to both our dogs. Our other dog is a one year boston terrier and I know bostons are prone to knee problems as well ( I think its called luxating patella). I didn’t think it would be a problem to give it to both, but on the manufacturer’s website it only mentions “mature” dogs in the description for Missing Link Plus. Just want to make sure this is okay, or if I should put the young one on the original Missing Link formula.
I just asked my friend, an holistic pracitioner, this question a couple of weeks ago. She told me they are never too young for glucosamine and chondroitin. I was asking referring to my 10 month old Chihuahua, as I had been giving it since he was 5 months. .

Can I take this supplement with my others?
I presently take a Glucosamine/Chondroitin MSM and an Omega-3 capsule each night. Can I safely add a CO-Q-10 supplement to that?
Absolutely! There are no contraindications between any of those and they are perfectly safe to take together (as long as you aren’t allergic to fish or shellfish) in the proper dosages. I hope I helped!
[edit]: Morpheus has some good points, but I wouldn’t just blindly take 9 Omega-3 pills a day… different pills have different potencies and too much Fish Oil can be very bad for you (especially if you are taking any blood thinners). Yes, some of them are low enough doses that 9 throughout the day would be perfectly fine, but some are so potent that just 3 of them would have the same quantity of the Fatty Acids as 9 of the other ones would.
Also, comparing the good fats in Fish Oil to those in a Big Mac would be like comparing an apple to a watermelon… they’re both fruits, but they have vastly different nutrients, tastes, and overall benefits. Fish Oil has other properties that vegetable oils and animal fats don’t possess (and vice versa) so they are nowhere near a similar comparison.
