PA law for service dogs in training?
What is the PA law on service dogs in training?
I am a freshman at Delaware Valley College. My major is small animal science. I want to raise a service dog on campus. I live in the dorms. I was wondering what the state laws for PA are for service dogs in training?
I would be raising a puppy to become a service dog.
Raising a puppy to be a service dog and actually training a service dog are two entirely different things.
The laws that apply to trainers are not applicable to raisers. When one is a raiser, one has no additional privileges than a normal pet owner. The access laws on the State and Federal level do not apply to raisers.
What you may wish to look into is a co-raising effort with another raiser that can take the animal when you are in class, and you can do the weekend and time out of class raising. However, a dorm is no place to be raising a pup of any kind, much less one destined to be a service dog. The stress factors involved in the dorm situation will burn out the pup and make it fearful too early on and eventually wash out the dog from effective service work. I suggest waiting until you have a more stable home situation.

hunting dog training tools

Dog training doesn’t have to be that difficult and really, when it comes to basic dog training, you only need a few dog training tools. Sure you can buy all the latest and greatest tools that money can buy but you don’t really need to and sometimes, such as is the case with dog training tools, less is actually more. That being said, I would like to point out that the type of training that you do will greatly affect the type of dog training tools that you need. For example, if you are training your dog for hunting, you will need a variety of tools such as dummies, birds, whistles and, possibly, a rifle. While hunting training may be a step that you are moving toward, for now we are just going to look at dog training tools that you will need for basic dog training.
Tool #1: The Bait Since most dog trainers use positive reinforcement you need some form of bait and reward for your dog. Obviously, food is a big incentive for many dogs but you may need to invest in something different if your dog is really not interested in food or your trainer recommends a different type of reward, such as a clicker. If you will be using food, it is important to use a soft treat that is cut into small morsels; usually about the size of your pinkie nail. Using small bites is the perfect dog training tool since a dog won’t lose focus when he is chewing the food and you won’t need to spend large amounts of money renewing your food reward.
Tool #2: The Lead (or leash) One piece of everyday dog gear that you will use as a dog training tool is a lead or leash. This is just a standard leash that you can use for walks on a daily basis and the only thing that it should be is sturdy. For many areas of training, this will be the most important dog training tool that you will use, outside of food, since this will give you the greatest control over your dog. What is usually recommended with leads is to purchase one that is 6 feet long with a sturdy clip. Do not purchase a retractable leash to use as a dog training tool since you will not have as much control over your dog if you do. If you decide to take your dog to different types of training, such as conformation, you will find that you need different styles of leads but for basic training, a simply 6 foot nylon lead is essential. When you move into long distance “come,” your trainer may ask you to purchase a 20 foot lead but that will be at the discretion of your trainer.
Tool #3: The Collar Although this dog training tool is often linked with the leash, it is important to look at the collar on its own. Generally, when you are looking for a good collar for training, you will want one that is flat and has a snapping clip to prevent the collar from slipping. Some trainers will recommend that you use a choke or a prong collar as an essential dog training tool but it is important that you only use those if you are told to do so and that you use the collar correctly since they can lead to serious injuries for the dog if used incorrectly.
Tool #4: The Toy While this isn’t a dog training tool that you will really use during the training, it is a good tool to have handy for breaks or even for distractions. During a training session, take a few breaks for the dog to be rewarded through play. This will keep your dog interested in training and it won’t seem too long for you puppy. In addition to providing a break, a toy can be placed out as a distraction when you are teaching come. Having the distraction will teach your dog that no matter what he is doing, he needs to listen when you give the command. Once you have all the essential dog training tools, I would recommend speaking with your trainer to find out if there is anything that he would recommend or, if the training is specialized, if there is anything extra you should bring. Usually, all you will really need is a lead, a collar and the reward.

Everyone knows that water intake during exercise is important. Physical exertion can cause your body to burn calories as well as an increase in perspiration as it removes heat away from the body. Sweating without fluid replenishment can increase the risk of dehydration if not careful. Your body needs fluids and pushing yourself without paying attention to those needs can cause heat stroke and even more critical issues.
Serious runners and bikers know that carrying a water bottle can interfere with the activity and can be distracting when trying to reach their goals. Hydrating systems that you can wear around your waste or on your back are becoming more popular to assist in hydration without getting in the way. There are several types and designs that allow you to carry various amounts of water with you during your run or bike trip.
Most athletes focus on comfort, fit and accessibility when looking at a waist or backpack products. The Shape, style and water capacity are the most important aspects when selecting a hydration unit. Some units can carry 1 or more liters of water without impacting the runner’s ability to stay in stride which is obviously important for the accomplished competitor.
In summary, if you are looking for a way to continue surpassing your goals, carrying more water with you during your activity is one way you can accomplish this. Water bottles are becoming less popular with the advent of backpack and fanny pack systems that can provide much needed water for the long haul.
Forget the clunky bottle Hiking Hydration Packs are easier to deal with while on the trail.
Do not let Thirst get in the way of your run, walk or skiing experience! A Hydration pack will keep you on the move and comfortable!

dog training commands list

anyone know Finnish?
Ok, so I’ve been working on training my puppies. They learned how to sit and shake so far. I was reading Dogs for Dummies and it said something in there about teaching your dog commands in different languages. I thought it sounded like a really cool idea. There was a site listed in there called Mr. P’s Dog Training. There were commands in several languages, and sound clips to hear the first half. But there is none for the language I want. I really want to teach them in Finnish, because that’s mostly what I am. Does anyone know how to speak a little Finnish? The commands are:
heel (seuraa)
sit (itsu)
stay (paikalla/paikka)
Down (Maahan)
Come (Tanne) with 2 dots over a
Stand (seiso)
Let go (irti)
Does anyone know how to say these properly?
I’m expecting like no responses, considering that I know no one who speaks Finnish. So if you don’t know, could you suggest a different language to teach my boys in? And give me a reason why?
Thanks so much!
Hi, there are more finnish speakers than you assume. Anyway about the dog:
Heel . Seuraa is not used much maybe you´d order mene or menevaan (pronounced mévaa) or jatkaa or tänne is more common
Sit – istu
Stay – paikalla / paikka
Stop – seis
Down – maahan
Come – tule tänne pronounced tú tänne or plainly tänne
Stand – seiso / ylös /nouse
Let go – irti
In my experience dogs understand and obey better sign language or sign accomåpanied by words

The Chinese Shar Pei was at one time called the “Chinese Fighting Dog”. It is most likely that it originated from a cross between the Mastiff and the Chow Chow and various indigenous breeds. In actual practice, the Shar Pei served several purposes.. It was used in china as a “pit” fighting dog, for entertainment and sport and also as a hunting dog and a herding breed and a watchdog. The dog originated, it is believed, in the Han Dynasty and the many statues of that era which depict the fierce fighting dogs with the scowl on their faces are believed to be representations of the Shar Pei.
The exceedingly loose skin that is the hallmark of the breed was its biggest advantage when pitted against other dogs, there was so much skin that it was difficult for a dog or any animal for that matter to get a grip or do serious damage to any vital organs. Eventually their use as a pit fighting breed diminished, because they simply did not ever posses the mentality or attitude to be a fighter. Most Shar Peis appear, to this day, to be rather disinterested in other animals.
In the 1940s, when the Communist Party came to power in China, dogs as pets were considered to be “decadent bourgeois luxury” and the breeding of dogs for pets was eventually completely banned. Many of the breeds of China very nearly became extinct during this period. A few remaining Shar Pei specimens somehow made it out out to the West at some point and the breed has been gaining in popularity ever since.
The standard of the breed, as translated from Chinese, reads that the head should be “pear-like” and the ears “like a clamshell” . The nose is to be like a butterfly, the face like that of a grandma, the legs like the shape of a ham, the back like that of the shrimp, the tail like that of a wire, the body like that of a fish…and so on. Suffice it to say that the Chinese Shar Pei bears little resemblance to any other breed. Indeed, the wrinkles alone are unique to say nothing of its strange looking face. It does possess the dark blue or purple tongue similar to the Chow Chow but that is about the only resemblance.
The Shar Pei can have eye problems, (known as entropion or ectropion) a condition where the eyelids roll inwards or outwards. This is a condition which can be corrected surgically. Because of the heavy rolls of skin and the wrinkles on the face even corrective surgery does not always have the desired result and this is a problem that owners should watch for. The Shar Pei possesses a rather “prickly” and harsh coat which seems to have the feel of the coat of a horse, actually. Its deep wrinkles and rather lumbering body remind one of the hippopotamus in some respects. The face of the Shar Pei seems to bear a perpetual “scowl” and it is part of the look of the famous Han Dynasty dog statues which were said to depict the original Shar Pei breed.
The Shar Pei has gained some popularity in the west because of its strange looks and rather endearing wrinkles as a puppy. However it grows up to be an aloof and independent dog, with a great deal of dignity and not necessarily the playful sort. It has however proved itself to be a beloved companion to many folks who treasure the dog for its quiet and dignified manner and for its noble demeanor.
